This is the Alberta tar sands, the largest oil reserves on the planet outside of Saudi This is one of the reasons why Canada, originally a climate change hero Community member Melina Laboucan-Massimo witnessed the changing landscape from industrial development in her territory, and she decided to take action. As And these days, even as Canada promotes action on climate change on the world stage, the Canadian and provincial governments are pushing to expand oil sands operations—which brings substantial economic benefits to the region—in the face of a chorus of opposition from environmentalists and indigenous people. The scientific expertise of Environment and Climate Change Canada is combined with traitional Indigenous knowledge in a video series highlighting the work of wildlife biologist Phil Thomas in Alberta's oil sands region. Teck Resources Ltd's surprise decision to cancel a planned C$20.6 billion ($15.6 billion) oil sands mine in northern Alberta, citing uncertainty about Canada's climate policy, underscores a global The oil sands contribute over 60 percent of that output and are vital to the west’s economy. Canadian output continues to grow because of investments made when global supplies were tighter.

Seen from the sky, the tar sands reach beyond the horizon and seem to go on forever, resembling a painful scar on the Earth of epic proportions. The greenhouse gas emissions of mining and upgrading tar sands is roughly 79 kilograms per barrel of oil presently, whereas melting out the bitumen in place requires burning a lot of natural gas—boosting emissions to more than 116 kilograms per barrel, according to oil industry consultants IHS The Suncor oil sands facility seen from a helicopter near Fort McMurray, Alta., on July 10, 2012. Climate Change is caused by greenhouse gas emissions, in particular carbon. 40% of Canada’s emissions already come from Alberta alone, not counting the entire tar sands infrastructure across North America nor counting the projected increase in tar sands production or the infrastructure built across the continent to accommodate such increases in production. Alberta's tar sands are among the most carbon-intensive sources of oil. The Canadian province announced it would temporarily curtail oil production in 2019 in the face of a saturated market and
